Mission Yearbook - June 1, 2008
First Presbyterian Church - Yuma

First Presbyterian Church, Yuma, is a 75-year-old mostly Anglo congregation. Attendance fluctuates dramatically with the seasons from about 60 in the summer to an average of 100 in the winter. Our church is located in an older part of town which has seen an influx of minorities, primarily Hispanic, many of whom are recent immigrants. We have two services each Sunday, one in English and one in Spanish. Between 15 and 20 children attend our Wednesday bilingual after-school program. Since 2004 the Rev. Phil Courtney has served as our pastor and we are encouraged by the enthusiasm and energy he has generated in our congregations.

We have identified a dynamic Hispanic pastor to serve as an evangelist and leader of our Hispanic Congregation. We are looking forward to April '08 when he will join our staff and we eagerly anticipate the gifts he will bring.

We partner with Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church, also of Yuma, and the Presbiterio Nor-Occidental (of Mexico) in SAM/MAS (Sonora Arizona Ministries/Ministerio Arizona Sonora) a program designed to plant Presbyterian churches in San Luis, Rio Colorado. The congregation of "Jesus, Pan de Vida", SAM/MAS's first church continues to grow and develop and is now self-supporting in all respects except for the pastor's salary.

Our priorities for the coming year are to continue/expand our outreach among our Hispanic neighbors both in Yuma and Mexico, to enlarge our membership and to work toward making our facilities handicap accessible.
