Mission Yearbook - May 17, 2009
Scottsdale Presbyterian Church

Since 1958, Scottsdale Presbyterian Church has served our community, and we have celebrated our 50-year anniversary with worship, music productions, recounting our history and thanking God for his faithfulness. Our youth ministry helps young people to learn about and deepen their faith in Jesus Christ. In 2008, we welcomed 17 young adult members. Girl Scouts also meet on our campus. Our Boy Scout Troop begins its 45th year in 2009.

Both contemporary and traditional worship services are held weekly. We plan to participate in 40 Days of Love in 2009, with Bible study and small group meetings. A group gathers weekly for intercessory prayer, and members hold weekly Bible study at an assisted living facility.

SPC is a host site for regional training events and a leader in residential redevelopment in our city through 'One Scottsdale,' which we sponsor. We deliver Mobile Meals and support Vista del Camino with generous donations for the needy. We have renovated our classroom wing restrooms to include wheelchair access and shower facilities, in preparation for the possibility of a pandemic flu or other threat.

The Iranian family we sponsored has become part of our church family, and we have welcomed their new baby.

We support Souper Bowl, Teen Challenge, and Immanuel Amen (which sends native language Bibles to Ethiopia). We support our own missionaries and those in mission through PCUSA. In 2008 we sent sixteen people to Gulfport MS to assist in housing reconstruction and building through the Presbytery of Mississippi. We also plan a mission trip in 2009. In cooperation with El Bethel, a local Ethiopian congregation, we held a Walk-a-thon to help buy a car for pastors and others in the Yabelo region of Ethiopia.

We continue to support local, national and international missions. In 3009, we participated in a Habitat for Humanity build and are planning another for 2010. We continue raising dollars to buy a vehicle for pastors and other in the Yabelo region of Ethiopia. We support and pray for missionaries in China, Ethiopia, Iraq and the United States. We continue our tradition of loving each other, loving our city and our world, and loving Jesus Christ most of all.

Looking Ahead

Scottsdale Presbyterian Church in 2009 gathered several elders and other leaders to study our community and what should be our mission to it in the years ahead. Over the fifty years we have been in this pladce, the area has grown younger and poorer. Instead of being a bedroom community for large employers in the area as in the past, we now have several distinct groups of residents, with a smaller number of children per home than previously.
