Mission Yearbook - May 24, 2009
Community Presbyterian Church, Payson
The community of Payson and our church have grown-up together. In 1917 the Board of Home Missions bought the land (for $30.00), and authorized the construction of a manse to be used by an occasional circuit rider. In 1934 the Church was chartered, making us 75 years old this year! (The celebration wiil however will be held in 2010, look for details!)
The Church and Payson continue to grow together. The church started the Child Learning Center 28 years ago and it has had over 13,000 students enrolled. Our Deacons continue to encourage and work with other non-profits and the county to establish more equitable guidelines for service to families in crisis. The church is active in neighborhood redevelopment with the Main Street Association. And, the arts are not neglected: we host a monthly Jazz concert in the sanctuary. This year the community has responded in un-presented ways. We were offered, and accepted, a $10,000 dollar donation for a new roof, from a community member. The Jazz group asked if they could raise funds for a new piano, (to which we said "yes") then another community member donated a used piano to us! (Worth more than the Jazz folks had raised!)
Ecumenically we participate with the Methodists, the ECLA Lutherans and the Episcopalians in our joint worship services, which are held throughout the year. This year with our Membership Growth Plan has been in full swing for two years, we have realized 11 new members in 2008 and we are hopeful that others who have attended our introductory class about what it means to be a Presbyterian and are attending church worship services may make a decision in the coming year to join. This makes the second straight year that we have had an increase in membership! God continues to lead us in wonderful and new ways!
