Mission Yearbook - January 19, 2009
Community Presbyterian Church, Payson
The community of Payson and our church have grown-up together. In 1917 the Board of Home Missions bought the land (for $30.00), and authorized the construction of a manse to be used by an occasional circuit rider. In 1934 the Mission Board sent a representative to assess the situation. In his report he stated, "Payson is not a field with which the Presbyterian Church should concern itself in the future…in my judgment, the best thing we could do in the interest of the Kingdom is to give them free hand, title to the property and our blessing:. In 1935, in response to this report, the members of the Payson congregation asked the Presbytery to charter them as a Presbyterian Congregation! (So much for the Mission Board's recommendation).
We continue to grow together. The church started the Child Learning Center 27 years ago and it has had over 13,000 students enrolled. Our Deacons continue to encourage and work with other non-profits and the county to establish more equitable guidelines for service to families in crisis. The church is active in neighborhood redevelopment with the Main Street Association. And, the arts are not neglected: we host a monthly Jazz concert in the sanctuary. As a congregation we are constantly looking for unmet needs. One such need was a Divorce Recovery program, which we started 3 years ago.
Ecumenically we participate with the Methodists, the ECLA Lutherans and the Episcopalians in our joint worship services which are held throughout the year. This year with our Membership Growth Plan in full swing for a year, we have realized 6 new members and we are hopeful that others who have attended our introductory class about what it means to be a Presbyterian and are attending church worship services may make a decision in the coming year to join our church. God continues to lead us in wonderful and new ways!
