Interim Executive Presbyter
Remarks to Desert Hills Presbyterian Church
Mar. 29, 2010
By now your congregation has received materials for the 2010 Pentecost Offering.
Downtown Urban Community Kids (DUCK) is the only designated ministry of Grand Canyon Presbytery. Downtown Urban Community Kids (DUCK) began as a mission of Historic First Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, Arizona in late 1995 and has been a recipient of their Pentecost Offering.
The church, the first congregation to be organized in the Arizona Territory in 1879, is in the midst of the state capital's in-the-process-of-being-revitalized area. Located on a street once called "church row", it is now the inner city. Members of the congregation surveyed the neighborhood to find out how they could address the needs of those who lived in a four mile radius of the church building. "A place for our kids to go after school" was the predominate answer.
DUCK calls it "Five Critical Hours." The hours between 3 and 8 pm which are precarious, even dangerous for inner-city kids. Most juvenile crime and gang recruitment occur during these after-school hours. So DUCK comes alongside families to ensure the safety and hope of each child is preserved. The DUCK Vision statement, "
Giving inner-city kids a vision for their future and the hope to achieve their God-given potential," came from an original DUCK kid, the first in her family to graduate from high school.
In 2008 DUCK decided to leave HFPC. God has been steadfast and blessed us with a new partnership with Betania Presbyterian Church. Today DUCK is located at 39th Ave and Thomas. We have a new location that is an ideal fit for our program and is strategically located to help us better serve our kids and their families. DUCK's commitment to serving inner city children and families has never wavered.
Today DUCK is a thriving after-school and summer program, an autonomous 501(c)3 nonprofit, providing kids from kindergarten through 6th grade with homework help, tutoring and varied activities which will expand their horizons, stretch their knowledge and introduce them to the love of God through Jesus Christ.
As your mission committee plans, please prayerfully consider designating Downtown Urban Community Kids (DUCK) in your 2010 Pentecost Offering.
