Presbyterian Alliance on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (PAADA)

PAADA Representative: Ellie Schafer (602) 275-0506

Presbyterian Alliance on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (PAADA) is a ministry of Grand Canyon Presbytery. PAADA offers educational opportunities and resource materials for use in the programs of our churches. Prevention through education is the best defense for the "war on drugs." Churches provide meeting rooms for AA and NA groups but this is not getting the whole job done. Use the resources available through Presbyterian Distribution Service (PDS) at 1-800-524-2612, especially the material ADDICTION, GRACE, AND HEALING: Alcohol-Drug Awareness Resources for the Congregations (PDS item 25790009); also, THE CIRCLE OF WHOLENESS, curriculum material for youth addiction prevention, (PDS item 25791002). The Church has a responsibility to do its part through prevention and education. Let it begin with you! For PAADA information, call Ellie Schafer (602) 275-0506.

Presbyterian Alliance on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse - PAADA
The Presbyterian Alliance on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (PAADA) was organized in the name of Jesus Christ to develop an awareness and recognition of the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction within the Presbyterian Church and to act as a bridge between the church and the recovery process for victims and their families. To that end, we provide worship services, information and educational programs, confidential counseling, and pastoral support.

PAADA has conducted programs for more than half of the churches in Grand Canyon Presbytery over the last 22 years. We have brought national leadership here for seminars for pastors, and have utilized local experts for Big Event workshops on varied areas of addiction. We participate in Mission and Health Fairs with our professional exhibit and make available to congregations a wide variety of informative material.

Scholarships are available for Pastors, Youth, and Lay Leaders to attend the outstanding School on Alcoholism and Drug Dependencies at the University of Utah.

PHEWA
PAADA is a sub-group of the Social Justice and Peacemaking Committee of the Presbytery of Grand Canyon and an affiliate of Presbyterians for Addiction Action (PAA) of the Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association (PHEWA).

Ellie Schafer receives Margaret A. Fuad Award

The Margaret A. Fuad Award
215th General Assembly (2003) PAA Award
Presbyterians for Addiction Action (PAA), formerly Presbyterian Network on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, is honored to announce that the recipient for the Margaret A. Fuad Award is Eleanore Schafer of Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Schafer has devoted nearly 50 years of service to drug and alcohol abuse, both in the community and in the church. At 85 years of age, Ellie still spends two days a week doing group therapy and education with those dealing with their drug and alcohol issues at St. Luke´s Medical Center in Phoenix.

Ellie, a mental health worker, started out in 1954 as the Executive for the Alcoholism Information Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A pioneer in this new field of community alcohol awareness and education, she developed most of the educational programs and community programs for the center.

Upon moving to Phoenix she became the first Executive Director for its Alcoholism Information Center. In 1969, seeking a deeper connection with the clients they served, she left administration and moved to direct patient care. St. Luke´s Medical Center, in urban Phoenix, was just beginning its alcoholism program. She has served there continuously in various capacities.

A long-time Presbyterian and member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, she has always sought to connect the church to its justice and healing roots. In the words of her nominator, Ellie then began "picking on people" that had an interest. Eventually the Presbyterian Alliance on Drug and Alcohol Abuse was formed. Ellie continues to be active in it and other presbytery social justice programs. She is particularly concerned with having a grant funded to work with the Native American churches in her presbytery.
Eleanore Schafer has been a member of PAA, PAN and PARO continuously since 1990 and a member of PHN since 1999.
The Margaret Fuad Award honors one of the co-founders of the Presbyterian Alcohol Network of which PAA is the successor. We are privileged to present this award to Eleanore Schafer who truly is a pioneer in the compassionate, effective treatment of alcohol and other drug abusers, as well as a church and community educator.
