Annual Report for Grand Canyon Presbytery - December 2007
Montlure Presbyterian Church Camp is a beautiful place in the White Mountains of Arizona for all to find and grow their faith in Jesus Christ.
Montlure Camp has served generations of Arizona Presbyterians since its inception in 1926 and resides on 13 acres of National Forest land in Greer at 8,500 feet on the north bank of the Little Colorado River. Snow covers the area in winter. Facilities include 8 bunk cabins, fully equipped male and female bathhouses including hot showers, a lodge/dining room supported by a commercial-grade kitchen, an admin building, a medical building, a recreation and indoor worship barn, 2 ramadas, a large field for sports, an outdoor chapel, and a residence for our on-site camp management.
Montlure is jointly owned by the Presbyteries of Grand Canyon and de Cristo. Funding is dependent upon the pledges of churches and individuals, off-season rentals, and summer camp fees. Nominees from the two presbyteries form the Montlure Camping Council which governs the camp, and volunteers serve as camp directors, chaplains, counselors and maintenance workers.
The key elements of our ministry are:
- A Christ-centered camping program of the highest quality.
- An environment where camp counselors and directors are nurtured as future leaders of the Church.
- A forum for establishing and developing strong connections between churches of the Presbyteries of Grand Canyon and de Cristo.
- A ministry that complements the Christian Education programs of our constituent churches
- A theology rooted in the essential tenets of the Reformed Faith as expressed in the creeds and confessions of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
- Creative stewardship of our site and facilities making continual improvements while respectful of what has been passed on to us by previous generations.
- Sound fiscal and organizational management, including an off-season rental program for families, churches and other compatible groups.
We held 8 outstanding camps in the summer of 2007. 503 campers from 69 different churches attended camp, a 10% increase over 2006. 199 attended our three Senior High camps (grades 9-12), 163 attended our three Junior High camps (grades 6-8), and 141 attended our two Juniors camps (grades 4-6). And, whether the camper was a 9-year-old away from home for the first time or a seasoned high school senior attending their last camp, the evaluations completed on the last day of camp told us that overwhelmingly our campers loved their camps.
We had 97 individuals serve as volunteer leaders - counselors, directors, assistants and chaplains. Our leaders came from 37 different churches and we significantly increased the number of leaders coming from the "parent generation". We had a great team of strong Christian leaders this summer and we look forward to many of them returning again next summer to build on the strong foundation of Christian camping we have put in place in recent years.
In addition to our summer camping program we held our first APEX camp for the post-high-school generation in January 2007 that was very well received. We will be holding another APEX in 2008.
Our focus for 2008 will be on further refining our staffing and training, improving our year-round connections to the Montlure community, seeking to increase our financial resources so we can implement our plans for significant improvements to the camp facilities next year, and increasing the support for the camp from our two presbyteries.
Our sponsoring churches and presbyteries can be very proud of Montlure, and all who desire to advance the cause of Christian Education are encouraged to actively participate in the ministry. For camp dates, application forms, and other information, please check our web site

Montlure Campership Request
The Educational Ministries Committee (EMC) values the spiritual growth of our churches' children and youth -- and the unique, perhaps life-changing, experience they can have in a summer camp at Montlure. Camperships are available to help provide this opportunity to young people who may need financial assistance. The amount given will be based on an individual's situation and need.

Campership Request
Montlure Presbyterian Church Camp is a beautiful place in the White Mountains of Arizona for all to find and grow their faith in Jesus Christ. Montlure's primary objective is to provide a Christian camping ministry of the highest quality for children and youth in grades 4-12. Campers travel to camp by bus and sleep in cabins. Each camp is led by a strong Christian staff drawn from Presbyterian Churches across Arizona. Montlure is an American Camp Association Accredited Camp operating in accordance with the highest national standards.
- Attendance at Montlure camps has grown 36% over the past 3 years and we had waiting lists for our Senior and Junior High camps in 2005. Campers are registered on a first-come, first-served basis so please register early!
- Camper registration forms are available now on our web site and in churches.
- Churches are invited to "bring" rather than "send" their children/youth to camp by recommending camps to attend, and by encouraging Camp Directors, Chaplains and Counselors to apply.
Montlure is available for church groups and others to rent in the off-season.
