2008 Mission Yearbook Memorial Presbyterian Church
Memorial has become a multicultural congregation. Founded in 1953, we are on the brink of meeting the goal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) of having 20% racial ethnic membership by 2010.
Responding to demographics, we are reaching out to Hispanics. In just over two years, we have added 20 Hispanic adult members and 30 children. Three Sundays a month, there are two separate worship services. Once a month, there is a combined communion service in Spanish and English. Every week, there is joint fellowship after worship followed by separate, language-specific, adult classes. The children are in Sunday school together. Everyone is excited about reaching out with God's love to one another. With help from PCUSA, translation equipment has been purchased that allows more flexibility in worship and education.
Part of the transformation that the church has undergone that allows reaching out to the neighborhood has been the restoration of our carillon. Our mission emphases are expanding with international outreach primarily to Africa, Peru, and Northern Ireland. The campus is being used extensively during the week as a site for the office of the neighborhood association, two AA and one Narcotics Anonymous meetings, a private school, and a nesting Tongan congregation.
