A letter from the Moderator of Presbytery
Dear friends,
Not long ago, I had an opportunity to attend a workshop on "cross cultural conflict management," presented by Dr. David Augsburger, professor of pastoral care and counseling at Fuller Seminary. It was especially helpful because it included not only lecture, but readers' theatre and "sculpting." This made some of the challenging material clear and visible. As I was there, I thought, "I wish our whole Presbytery were here - this would really help us."
Within our Presbytery, we have many different cultures. And it is hard for us to talk with each other about some sensitive matters. Conflict management is difficult, especially when crossing cultural lines. I proposed to our agenda planning committee that we include a workshop with David Augsburger at one of our Presbytery meetings. I am glad to report that he is coming, and will be working with us for a significant part of our meeting at Southminster. I see this as a great opportunity for us. Not that we will solve all of our problems in
one day, or become "experts" in cross-cultural conflict management, but that we can take some steps toward fulfilling our Presbytery's mission. I hope that you will make it a high priority to be with us for the entire meeting on November 13th. I look forward to being together.
Yours in Christ's service,
Gale Watkins, Moderator
The finale for Southminster's 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held during the weekend of Friday, November 12 through Sunday, November 14, 2004. Southminster also has the great honor of hosting the Grand Canyon Presbytery meeting on Saturday, November 13th. Grand Canyon Presbytery members are invited to join us in our Celebration throughout the weekend of activities. This will be our grand opportunity to celebrate our oneness, our steadfastness, our resolve, our blessings and to give praise to our Lord, Jesus Christ for His grace, mercy and unwavering love.
Activities to be held during the Celebration weekend include:
· Friday, 6:00 PM - the weekend's programming convenes with a dinner and program. The Keynote speaker for the evening will be Mrs. Patricia G. Brown, Elder, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Chinle, Arizona and 209th General Assembly Moderator. Mrs. Brown has been with us on prior occasions sharing her talents and resources to spread the good news of the Gospel in glorification of our Lord. Mrs. Brown is the author of the book, "Preaching from the Pew" where she takes the reader on a personal journey into and out of some of the most critical challenges facing the Church and Presbyterian Christians in these turbulent and confusing times.
· Saturday, 8:00 AM (Registration) 8:30 AM (Meeting) - Grand Canyon Presbytery Meeting
· Sunday, 10:00 AM - Worship Service - we will be honored to have with us Southminster's Founding Pastor and Pastor Emeritus, Dr. G. Benjamin Brooks, Sr., and Mr. Cody Williams, President/CEO of the Greater Phoenix Black Chamber of Commerce and former Phoenix City Councilman, District 8. Our Chancel Choir will be joined by several choir alumni to provide special music.
· Sunday, 11:30 AM - Reception, Celebration and Praise
You will not want to miss this eventful occasion as Southminster celebrates 50 years of dedicated community service. We will celebrate and reflect on the past 50 years and welcome the challenges and inspiration of providing community service for the next 50 years.
