TO: Clerks of Session, Minister Members, Elder Commissioners and Other Presbyters
FROM: Richard E. Coffelt, Stated Clerk
DATE: March 2, 2007
The Presbytery of Grand Canyon is hereby called to meet for its Stated Meeting on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17, 2007 at Northminster Presbyterian Church, Phoenix. Registration is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM on Friday, with the meeting to begin promptly at 4:00 PM.
The Theme of this meeting is Listening and highlights for this Stated Meeting as reflected on the Tentative Agenda are the following:
- Julia Thorne, Immigration Attorney for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), on Saturday will present an historical perspective of our denomination's involvement in immigration from our earliest beginnings, followed immediately by Celebration of the Lord's Supper.
- A time after dinner on Friday to experience Mutual Invitation and Dialogue as alternative forms of decision-making as the Presbytery considers the Overture from the Session of Kingman Presbyterian Church Session which was received as new business at the January 20, 2007 Annual Meeting. The Bills and Overtures Committee having reviewed the Overture and the concepts of alternative methods of decision making believes a discussion of the Overture would be enhanced by engaging in a structured process of Mutual Invitation and Dialogue. In order to gain the maximum benefit of such an alternative process and in order to evaluate its effectiveness they are recommending that this alternative process be utilized for at least both the March 16-17, 2007 and the June 9, 2007 Stated Meetings.
- Report of the Executive Presbyter
- Presentation of the George Brooks Award to Phil and Lori Gates
- Recommendation to enroll Inquirer Kyle Schmidt (Mountain View) as a Candidate
- Art Mills, Regional Representative from the Board of Pensions, will be present for both days of the meeting and will make a brief presentation on Friday
- Voting on Proposed Amendments to the Constitution proposed by the 217th General Assembly (2006)
In addition to the meeting itself, there will be two opportunities for Pre-Presbytery Workshops. See the informational sheets: Evangelism 101 Workshop featuring the return of Rev. Raafat Girgis, PCUSA Associate for Evangelism, and the Workshop on the Proposed Rewrite of Chapter XIV of the Book of Order offered by the Bills and Overtures Committee and the Stated Clerk.
We look forward to your participation in the March Stated Meeting and the opportunity it provides to re-connect with one another, to celebrate community and to joyfully offer ourselves to God and be equipped for God's service in the world through Worship.
