Mission Yearbook - August 3, 2008
Historic First Church
Winds of change are blowing in downtown Phoenix. Not just in the construction and redevelopment of the city but at Historic First Presbyterian Church (HFPC) also change is in the air. For the first time in seven years HFPC will have a called pastor. An eighteen month visioning/ redevelopment study has just been completed. We dreamt some big dreams. We are ready for the fulfillment of these dreams as the Holy Spirit leads us. We are confident that the time for HFPC is NOW!!!!!!.
The congregation at HFPC has been faithful to many long established local, national and international Mission causes. A new mission outreach has been added at HFPC. It takes the form of ministering to the downtown ASU students. Meals have been prepared, volleyball played, mentoring done and just plain old fellowship. Arizonans for Children continues to be housed at HFPC. These court appointed special advocates and the families (foster and biological caregivers) involved are at the church six days a week. There may even be a need to schedule evening appointments. Approximately forty thousand individuals per year use this program in one way or another. This program along with the many other outreach usage of our building means that the 58,000 square feet of HFPC's space is used to serve the community every day of the week. Even the nearby Phoenix firemen use the third floor gym for exercise one morning a week.
HFPC has also started a contemporary sevice called DSTNY. The worship style is non traditional. Musical talent of almost any expression is encouraged and allowed. Individuals are asked to give witness to their faith journeys as to how Chriist's love has touched their lives.
We covet your prayers as HFPC continues to keep a presence for our Lord in the heart of Phoenix.
