News from the Stewardship, Mission, and Communications Development Committee

Mission is what the Church is all about! Jesus commissioned his followers and all of us to take the message of the Good News into all the world - and thanks to you, the Mission is ongoing! We want to take this opportunity to thank all of our churches for continuing their faithful support of the entire mission of the Church - that which you do in your communities, that which we do in Presbytery and Synod, and that which we do worldwide. The following report highlights three mission enterprises that help to illustrate how we are all connected.

An Update on Crosswinds Presbyterian Church
by Rev. Michael Hartwell

In the spring of 2005, Crosswinds Presbyterian Church was struggling through the process of planning a new worship facility. Trying to overcome the visibility and accessibility issues of the property and the difficulty of building on a hillside was troublesome enough. Then a new concern arose: the vacant land next to us, owned by a Seventh Day Adventist congregation, was sold to a developer. All our hopes of a shared parking lot with a neighboring church vanished. Yet our concern became a joy when, after a great deal of negotiation and prayer, Crosswinds sold its property to the same developer for $1.5 million. Within a few months the congregation purchased property at 15th Avenue and the 101 Freeway for about $1 million, leaving the remaining funds for our future building project.

On Easter of 2006, Crosswinds gathered for the last time for worship in its old facility, and became "wanderers in the wilderness." The following week, the congregation began worshiping in a school. Unfortunately those facilities were inadequate, and after about six weeks worship was moved to a different elementary school. Crosswinds is now worshiping at Lookout Mountain Elementary school, located at Central Avenue and Coral Gables. We also leased a house that is used for office space and meetings, as well as providing storage for the church.

Our Building Commission has been working hard in planning the new facilities. There have been several bumps on our journey, including the expected decrease in worship attendance following the move. However the church is gifted with a dedicated group of faithful Christians, who are committed to serving God through Christ's ministry at Crosswinds. There is also a growing excitement and passion as the church moves forward, always trying to remember that a building is just a tool to the ultimate goal of building a church, and "for building up the body of Christ."

An Update on Christ Presbyterian Church
by Rev. Robert Simmons

Christ Presbyterian Church was chartered in 1958 and soon became a strong and vibrant congregation known for its children and youth programs. After battling years of decline during the 1990's, Christ Church embarked on a program of transformation that developed programs centering around the creation of a dynamic blended worship experience, strong educational opportunities for children and adults, outreach to the community, and nurturing the members of the church.

A critical component of this transformation came in the later part of 2003 when a strategic plan was set in place to sell the existing campus in west Phoenix, buy land in Goodyear, relocate the congregation to the West Valley, and build a new church campus. The overall vision was to become a transforming church with a multicultural, multigenerational congregation. In July of 2005, our Maryvale campus was sold to the Arizona Korean Presbyterian Church; and Christ Church relocated to the Goodyear/Avondale area. Office space is now being rented at 316 N. Central Avenue in Avondale with worship being held in the Masonic Lodge Hall on Dysart Road. In 2006 we received 35 new members and worship attendance now averages 130.

Plans to begin the building of an 8,880 square foot sanctuary are completed and construction will begin in early 2007. Plans for funding this new project are being finalized. The new sanctuary will seat 400 and will provide space for offices, prayer, education, choir rooms, a large reception area and small kitchen/fellowship hall. A children's playground, and large patio for gathering with a fountain for outdoor baptismal services will compliment the campus. A beautiful prayer and memory garden will also be added.

Our past is important to us as it serves to remind us of our rich heritage, but we always remember that this heritage includes a bright and hope-filled future. We are confident that the future belongs to the Lord. God will guide us to minister in this new area of the valley with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love!

Our Extra Commitment Opportunity in Mozambique
Seven members of our Presbytery traveled to Africa in May of 2005 and returned filled with stories to share about our Presbyterian sisters and brothers in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. We are very excited about the holistic ministry that is going on in that region and have an ambitious goal to raise $200,000 over three years to help support this important work. Already $10,000 has been raised to help with water wells, birth attendant kits, bicycles for health care workers and evangelists, and provide training to deal with HIV/AIDS. The ministry there is vital for the lives of the people who are new to the faith, but also serve as brothers and sisters in mission. The Rev. Nedson Zulu and public health nurse, Sebe Banda help to provide this ministry. Through seminars, training events and drama teams, they are our hands and feet to provide much needed support in that region of Africa. We hope that your church (after completing your mission pledge to Presbytery, Synod and GA) will consider a special gift to the Africa mission. Tell us what you want to support, such as $150 for a bicycle or $150 for a birthing kit. Water wells cost at least $8,000, but hey, that's only about the cost of all our church water bills for one month - maybe we could do that! Thank you for being open to this new challenge!

The exciting news from Crosswinds Church and Christ Church help to illustrate that mission is about church transformation. They are taking a leap of faith to become a new presence in their community, and we applaud their work on our behalf. Likewise, our mission in Africa is a further extension of God's love and care to others half a world away. May God bless our work together as we work to remain faithful to his Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

To arrange for a special presentation to your church group about mission opportunities in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, contact the Presbytery office: 602-468-3820 for more information. Did you know that $20 will buy school supplies for a student for a year? $25 will buy a desk that seats three students. The Outreach Foundation's 2007 Vacation Bible School (VBS) Supplement shows how even a small amount raised by your VBS students can make a difference to the children in Mozambique.

The Outreach Foundation reports that new churches are springing up at an average rate of five per year. "Churches begin as villagers tell neighbors and relatives about Jesus Christ. Because there are only two pastors for almost sixty congregations, most of the preaching, teaching and visiting is done by local people." Churches and schools are built in partnership with local people, not for them. Rev. Nedson Zulu coordinates training for youth, elders, women and teachers. Mrs. Banda leads seminars on childbirth, sanitation, HIV/AIDS, first-aid, and nutrition.

Mission Yearbook - Appendix 2008
Stewardship-mission-communications are what the church is all about. Without stewardship there would be no mission. Without communication neither mission nor stewardship would flourish. As a committee, Stewardship, Mission and Communications Development (SMCD) serves congregations and the presbytery by providing information, workshops, ideas and other resources in each area-stewardship, mission and communications.
  • Stewardship
  • » Assists sessions with commitment of the whole self to God-time, talent and treasure-and the giver's need to give;
  • » Assists sessions understand and interpret how their mission efforts fit into the larger picture of the Presbytery of Grand Canyon, the Synod of the Southwest and the Presbyterian Church (USA) around the world.
  • Mission
  • » Provides information to churches about opportunities for mission activities at different levels of the PC (USA);
  • » Offers ideas about how and in what areas churches may increase their mission support.
  • Communications
  • » Sponsors Focus, a quarterly presbytery newsletter, and The Presbytery Mission Yearbook;
  • » Helps churches get to know their sister churches through modern technology;
  • » Assists sessions with stewardship and mission material developed by the presbytery, synod and/or General Assembly;
  • » Consults with the presbytery regarding communication strategies.
