Mission Yearbook - 2008
Celebration of Life Presbyterian Church
Celebration of Life Presbyterian Church, located in West Mesa, has been a mission oriented, social justice conscious, inclusive congregation since its beginnings in 1974. Since 2004, however, our mission focus has centered on a project of support for those who are both seriously mentally ill (SMI) and homeless here in Maricopa County.
Every other month a group of volunteers gathers at the church on a Saturday morning to assemble 150 hygiene kits (toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, tissue, soap, toilet paper, shampoo, razors, Q-tips, Band-aids, clean socks and T-shirts). Some of the materials are donated by members, and some are purchased using funds from our mission budget. For the past two years we have also designated our SouperBowl offering and the 25% of our Peacemaking Offering to this project. The completed kits are distributed by mental health caseworkers to SMI homeless persons, not currently in the mental health care system. These gifts help outreach workers establish rapport and encourage the SMI to seek and accept available assistance and treatment. For a person who has little or nothing, to receive a gift of these simple items helps in establishing trust and building self esteem.
Those of us who volunteer to help with this project look forward to working together in a setting other than Sunday morning. We offer our time and energy once every other month and at the end of the morning we can see what we have accomplished. And our liaisons to the Mental Health Guild of Arizona keep assuring us that our gifts are truly treasured. In 2006 we were honored to receive the Florence Iverson Kraft Award by the Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Committee for our work on this project. During the summer of 2007 our interest in mental health issues led us to a review and discussion of the study guide on mental health now being reviewed by the General Assembly for presentation in 2008. Through our discussion we discovered that each of our lives has been touched by someone with a serious mental illness.
